How to Go From 25 to 30 on the ACT: Targeted Score Plan
Move from ACT 25 toward 30 with targeted section repair, stronger Math and grammar, faster Reading decisions, timed practice and deep error review.
A 25 ACT is around the 83rd percentile.
A 30 is around the 94th percentile.
To make that jump, broad review becomes less useful.
You need to identify which section and skill patterns are still costing you the most. If you're not yet consistently in the mid-20s, the guide to moving from 20 to 25 is a better starting point. For a full walkthrough of sections and scoring on the current format, see our Enhanced ACT guide.
Start with your weakest core section
The current Composite uses:
- English;
- Math;
- Reading.
Suppose:
- English 29
- Math 23
- Reading 27
Math is the clearest opportunity.
A plan that spends equal time on all three sections wastes time.
English at the 25–30 level
You should aim to make core grammar almost automatic:
- boundaries;
- agreement;
- modifiers;
- verb forms;
- pronouns;
- parallelism.
Then improve:
- rhetorical purpose;
- organization;
- concision;
- transitions.
Math
Move beyond foundations into:
- functions;
- quadratics;
- geometry;
- trigonometry;
- statistics/probability;
- modeling.
But continue protecting easy points.
A 30-level score cannot afford repeated basic misses.
Reading
Focus on:
- passage structure;
- evidence location;
- inference restraint;
- author purpose;
- paired perspectives.
Pacing improves when you stop rereading entire passages.
Full sections matter
At this stage, isolated drills are not enough.
You need to know whether:
- English rules survive speed;
- Math methods remain efficient;
- Reading accuracy holds under time.
Error review
For every miss, label:
- knowledge;
- process;
- timing;
- careless;
- misread.
Then ask:
What would prevent this exact type of miss next time?
Superscore strategy
If your colleges accept ACT Superscores, your preparation can focus heavily on your weakest section while maintaining your stronger ones.
That can make the 25-to-30 path more efficient. Once you're consistently near 30, the guide to moving from 30 to 34 covers the next stage of that climb, and the rest of our ACT guides cover other sections and score bands.
Bottom line
The move from 25 to 30 usually comes from:
targeting your weakest core section + making medium questions reliable + improving timed execution
Do not restart a beginner course unless your diagnostic shows you genuinely need it.
