ACT Writing Test 2026: Should You Take It? Essay Strategy & Format

The ACT Writing test is optional.

It is a 40-minute essay completed after the multiple-choice sections.

What the prompt gives you

ACT gives you:

• a complex issue;
• three perspectives on that issue.

You then write an essay that:

1. states your own perspective;
2. analyzes the relationship between your view and at least one provided perspective;
3. supports your ideas with reasoning and examples.

You may agree with one of the provided perspectives or create your own.

Should you take ACT Writing?

Only if there is a reason.

Check whether your:

• target college;
• scholarship;
• special program;
• state/school requirement

uses or requires it.

Essay structure

A simple structure can work.

Introduction

• identify the issue;
• state your position.

Body 1

• explain your strongest reason;
• use an example.

Body 2

• engage with another perspective;
• explain agreement/disagreement.

Body 3

• add nuance, limitation or second reason.

Conclusion

• restate the insight without merely copying the introduction.

You are not graded on your opinion

ACT says your score is not affected by which perspective you take.

You are graded on how well you:

• develop ideas;
• analyze;
• organize;
• use language.

Planning time

Do not spend 15 minutes planning a 40-minute essay.

A practical approach:

• 5 minutes plan;
• ~30 minutes write;
• ~5 minutes revise.

Adjust based on your speed.

What makes an essay stronger?

Specific reasoning

Not:

Technology is good.

Better:

Remote medical consultations can reduce travel barriers for rural patients, although they cannot replace every in-person examination.

Engagement with another view

Show that you understand another perspective before responding to it.

Organization

Each paragraph should have a purpose.

Clear language

Complex vocabulary does not automatically improve an essay.

Common mistakes

• summarizing all three perspectives without taking a position;
• giving examples with no explanation;
• writing one giant paragraph;
• spending too long on the introduction;
• leaving no time to revise.

Bottom line

Take ACT Writing only when it serves a real requirement or application purpose.

If you take it, focus on:

clear position + analysis + evidence + organization

not fancy vocabulary.
