The current SAT is fully digital for weekend testing. It has 98 questions across two sections, takes 2 hours and 14 minutes of testing time, and uses a multistage adaptive format. Reading and Writing comes first, followed by a 10-minute break and then Math.

How the Digital SAT is structured
The SAT has two sections:
- Reading and Writing
- Math
Each section is split into two modules.
Reading and Writing
You get 64 minutes for 54 questions, divided into two 32-minute modules.
Unlike the old paper SAT, you do not read one long passage and answer a large group of questions. Most Digital SAT Reading and Writing questions use a short passage or pair of passages followed by one question.
That changes the skill being tested. You still need reading comprehension, grammar, evidence analysis, and vocabulary in context, but you have to reset quickly from one small task to the next.
Math
You get 70 minutes for 44 questions, divided into two 35-minute modules.
A calculator is permitted for the entire section. Bluebook includes Desmos, and students may also use an approved handheld calculator.
The current SAT Math content is organized into four broad domains:
- Algebra
- Advanced Math
- Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
- Geometry and Trigonometry
Do not confuse a domain percentage with a guarantee that a specific subtopic will appear a fixed number of times. For example, Advanced Math is a large domain, but no official source promises a certain number of quadratic-formula questions on every form.
What “adaptive” actually means
The SAT is multistage adaptive, not question-by-question adaptive.
That distinction matters.
In each section:
- Module 1 contains a mix of easier, medium, and harder questions.
- Your performance on Module 1 helps determine which version of Module 2 you receive.
- Module 2 is then routed to a generally higher- or lower-difficulty set.
You do not see a question get harder immediately because you answered the previous question correctly.
Does getting a hard Module 2 guarantee a high score?
No.
A harder second module is generally a sign that your first-module performance was strong enough to route you there, but you still have to answer Module 2 well. Your score is not determined simply by counting correct answers, and two students with the same number correct can sometimes receive different scores because question characteristics matter.
The useful takeaway is simple: Module 1 deserves respect. Rushing through “easy” questions and making careless mistakes can damage your route and your final score.
How Digital SAT scoring works
Your total SAT score ranges from 400 to 1600.
- Reading and Writing: 200–800
- Math: 200–800
The two section scores are added to produce the total.
The digital SAT uses Item Response Theory and an adaptive design. That means the scoring process considers more than a simple raw percentage.
This is why “I missed exactly seven questions, so what is my score?” is not a reliable question without knowing the test form and scoring model.
What score should you aim for?
There is no universal “good” SAT score.
A useful target depends on:
- your current baseline;
- the colleges on your list;
- whether those colleges are test-required, test-flexible, or test-optional;
- the score range of admitted students;
- scholarships or honors programs you are targeting.
As a broad national reference, current College Board user-percentile data places a 1200 around the 75th percentile, a 1300 around the 85th percentile, a 1400 around the 93rd percentile, and a 1500 around the 97th percentile among recent SAT users.
But a “good score” for one college may be weak for another. Always compare your score with the institutions you actually care about.
What is tested in Reading and Writing?
The section draws from four broad skill areas:
Information and Ideas
You may need to:
- identify the main idea;
- find or interpret evidence;
- make an inference;
- read data presented alongside text.
Craft and Structure
You may need to:
- determine a word’s meaning in context;
- identify an author’s purpose;
- analyze text structure;
- compare two short texts.
Expression of Ideas
You may need to:
- choose the best transition;
- use notes to accomplish a writing goal;
- improve organization and rhetorical effectiveness.
Standard English Conventions
You may need to:
- fix sentence boundaries;
- use punctuation correctly;
- maintain subject-verb agreement;
- fix modifiers;
- choose grammatically correct verb forms and pronouns.
The biggest mistake students make is treating the whole section as “reading.” A large part of your score comes from repeatable grammar and rhetoric rules.
What is tested in Math?
Algebra
Expect linear equations, systems, inequalities, slope, and linear relationships.
Advanced Math
Expect nonlinear relationships, quadratics, exponents, polynomials, rational expressions, radicals, and functions.
Problem-Solving and Data Analysis
Expect ratios, rates, percentages, probability, statistics, units, tables, and data interpretation.
Geometry and Trigonometry
Expect area, volume, angles, triangles, circles, coordinate geometry, and basic trigonometric relationships.
Desmos is a tool, not a replacement for math
Because Desmos is built into Bluebook, some students assume every SAT Math problem should be graphed.
That is inefficient.
Desmos is excellent for:
- finding intersections;
- solving some systems;
- checking roots;
- visualizing quadratics;
- testing points;
- performing regression on appropriate data;
- verifying algebra.
But simple algebra is often faster by hand.
A strong student learns three options for many problems:
- solve algebraically;
- solve graphically;
- plug in or test answer choices.
Then choose the fastest reliable route.
How much time do you have per question?
Average time is useful, but it should not become a prison.
Reading and Writing
64 minutes / 54 questions = about 71 seconds per question on average.
Math
70 minutes / 44 questions = about 95 seconds per question on average.
Some questions should take 20–30 seconds. Others deserve two minutes.
Your goal is not to spend the same amount of time everywhere. Your goal is to avoid spending three minutes on one question while five solvable questions remain unseen.
A better way to prepare
Random practice feels productive because you are always “doing SAT questions.” It is usually less efficient than targeted practice.
Use this cycle:
Step 1: Establish a baseline
Take a realistic timed diagnostic.
Record:
- total score;
- section scores;
- question types missed;
- questions guessed correctly;
- questions where you ran out of time.
Step 2: Build a leak map
Classify every important miss:
- concept gap;
- rule/formula gap;
- misread;
- process error;
- careless execution;
- timing problem.
If you only record “wrong,” you learn almost nothing.
Step 3: Repair one skill at a time
If your data shows repeated errors in punctuation, linear equations, transitions, and percentages, do not “study SAT English” or “study SAT Math.”
Study those four things.
Step 4: Retest the skill
After learning, do a fresh set without notes. Improvement must survive after the explanation disappears.
Step 5: Add timing
Accuracy first, speed second.
Step 6: Return to full modules and full tests
Use full tests to measure integration and endurance, not as your only learning method.

Grammar is one of the most trainable parts of the exam.
5. Using Desmos for everything
Tool fluency matters, but so does judgment.
6. Reviewing only wrong answers
Lucky guesses also belong in your error log.
7. Studying equally across all topics
Spend more time where your expected point return is highest.

Is the SAT completely digital?
Yes. Current weekend SAT administrations use College Board’s Bluebook testing application.
Can I use a calculator on every SAT Math question?
Yes. Calculator use is allowed throughout the Math section. Bluebook includes Desmos, and approved handheld calculators may also be used.
Is the Digital SAT easier than the old SAT?
It is shorter and structured differently, but “easier” depends on the student. Short passages and full-section calculator access help some students; adaptive routing and precision under time pressure challenge others.
Can colleges see whether I got the easier or harder second module?
Your score report presents scores, not a label telling colleges that you received a particular Module 2 route.
How many practice tests should I take?
There is no magic number. A smaller number of carefully reviewed tests is more valuable than many tests you barely analyze.
Should I prepare for both the SAT and ACT?
Usually, take one realistic diagnostic for each before committing. Once one test shows a clearly better fit, concentrated preparation is generally more efficient than splitting your attention indefinitely.
