Why Error Review Matters More Than Your SAT or ACT Question Count
Doing questions is only half the work. Learn how useful feedback and error review turn wrong SAT and ACT answers into better future decisions.
A wrong answer gives you information.
But only if you use it.
Student A does 80 questions and checks the answer key.
Student B does 25 questions and can explain every miss.
Student B may have learned more.
Feedback is not just “wrong”
Useful feedback answers:
- What did I misunderstand?
- What rule mattered?
- Why was my answer tempting?
- Why is the correct answer better?
- What should I notice next time?
Research on feedback
A large 2020 meta-analysis combined hundreds of studies involving more than 61,000 learners.
On average, feedback was associated with meaningful improvements in learning.
But the authors emphasized an important point:
feedback is not one single thing.
Its effect depends on the information it contains.
Some feedback helps.
Some does little.
Some can even hurt.
Weak feedback
Incorrect. Answer: C.
Better feedback
B is tempting because it repeats a phrase from the passage, but the passage never says the change caused the outcome. C is supported because it describes only the relationship the data establish.
Now the student can change a future decision.
A five-question error log
For every important miss:
- What skill?
- Why did I choose my answer?
- Why is it wrong?
- Why is the correct answer right?
- How will I recognize this next time?
That is enough.
You do not need a 14-column spreadsheet. This kind of structured process beats random, unstructured practice.
Classify errors
Use a few categories:
- content gap;
- misread;
- method;
- timing;
- careless;
- uncertain guess.
If one category repeats, fix the pattern. Revisiting those categories again later, instead of only once, is what spaced practice is built around.
Review correct guesses too
A lucky answer can hide a weakness.
If you were between B and D, review it.
High scorers especially need to eliminate hidden uncertainty.

Do not chase question volume so aggressively that you skip the part where the improvement happens.
