Practice Tests vs Learning: Why More SAT & ACT Tests Are Not Always Better

A practice test answers:

How did I perform today?

It does not automatically answer:

How do I get better?

That is why taking ten full tests can produce less improvement than taking four tests and deeply repairing what each one reveals.

Testing can support learning

Practice testing has strong support in general learning research.

Trying to retrieve knowledge can strengthen later recall.

But SAT/ACT full tests also serve another role:

measurement.

Those two roles should not be confused. Retrieval works best when it's spread out over time rather than crammed, which is the idea behind spaced practice.

Example

Practice Test 1 shows:

• weak sentence boundaries;
• weak nonlinear equations;
• poor final-module pacing.

Student A takes Practice Test 2 the next day.

Student B spends five days fixing those three problems, then takes Test 2.

Student B is using the test as a diagnostic.

Full tests are expensive in time

A full test requires:

• testing time;
• review time;
• recovery/attention.

If you already know the weakness, more measurement may add little.

Better weekly ratio

A typical week might contain:

• 2–3 targeted sessions;
• 1 mixed/timed session;
• error review;
• full test only when useful.

What the 2025 test-prep meta-analysis found

Interestingly, a recent meta-analysis of preparation for large-scale educational tests found an overall positive preparation effect but little evidence that sample items or practice tests alone explained the effect.

That is another reason not to reduce preparation to:

“take more tests.”

Practice tests are important.
