How to Go From 1400 to 1500 on the SAT: The Final 100-Point Plan
Already around 1400? Learn how to target the final 100 points with hard-question practice, section-specific repair, timing, error recurrence and realistic tests.
A 1400 is around the 93rd percentile.
A 1500 is around the 97th percentile.
At this level, the final 100 points usually do not come from “learning the SAT.”
They come from removing a relatively small number of remaining weaknesses.
If you want a full week-by-week structure around this repair work, the 8-week SAT study plan lays one out—or see the rest of our SAT study plans for other timelines.
Your job: find the leak
Take your last two or three serious practice tests.
List:
- wrong questions;
- guessed correct questions;
- questions that took too long.
Then group them.
Example:
| Error type | Count |
|---|---|
| difficult inference | 4 |
| nonlinear functions | 3 |
| careless sign/unit | 3 |
| vocab | 1 |
Now you have a study plan.
If you're starting below 1400, the 1200 to 1400 plan covers a wider set of fundamentals first.
The 1400 trap
Many students respond to a 1400 by doing more full tests.
But if every full test reveals the same weakness, more testing is not the answer.
Repair first.
Reading & Writing
At this range, remaining errors are often:
- subtle inference;
- cross-text degree;
- function/purpose;
- difficult vocabulary;
- one grammar slip from rushing.
You need answer-choice discipline.
Ask:
Which word in this wrong answer makes it too strong, too broad or slightly wrong?
Math
Remaining Math errors often involve:
- parameters;
- difficult quadratics/functions;
- hidden algebraic structure;
- geometry/trig;
- modeling;
- Desmos vs hand-method choice.
A 1500-level student needs both content and efficiency.
Careless errors need a system
“Careless” is not a diagnosis.
Was it:
- sign?
- copied number?
- wrong quantity?
- unit?
- skipped word?
- calculator entry?
If the same mistake happens repeatedly, create a prevention habit.
Example:
Before submitting every Math answer, reread exactly what quantity the question asks for.
Hard Module 2
Do not panic when Module 2 feels difficult.
Your job is not to estimate your score during the test.
Use:
- skip;
- mark;
- return;
- answer everything.
Practice less randomly
At 1400+, practice should become selective.
One hour of the exact pattern you keep missing can be more valuable than 60 random questions.
Full tests
Take them when you need to measure:
- whether repair worked;
- pacing;
- fatigue;
- score stability.
Do not use them as daily worksheets.
If test day is only days away, the one-week SAT study plan narrows this down further.
How MastaPrep fits
This score range is where targeted practice matters most.
MastaPrep can keep the focus on the small number of skills that are still unstable, raise difficulty as you improve, and revisit them later before a full test checks whether the change held up.
Bottom line
The final 100 points are rarely hidden in a giant secret strategy.
They usually come from:
finding the same few mistakes, fixing them properly, and proving they stay fixed under time.
