SAT Command of Evidence: Textual & Quantitative Evidence Guide
Master Digital SAT Command of Evidence questions using claim-first reasoning, textual evidence, tables and graphs, quantitative precision, and original practice.
Command of Evidence questions ask you to choose evidence that best supports a claim or conclusion.
College Board divides this skill into:
- Textual Evidence
- Quantitative Evidence
The core strategy is the same for both:
Understand the claim first. Then find the evidence that proves exactly that claim.
Textual Evidence
A textual evidence question may present:
- a short passage;
- a claim about a character, study, author, or idea;
- several quotations or statements.
You choose the evidence that most directly supports the claim. For more on this domain, see our Reading & Writing guides.
The claim-first method
Step 1: simplify the claim
Claim:
The narrator values practical experience more than formal instruction.
Simplify:
narrator prefers doing over classroom learning.
Step 2: predict what evidence would look like
Likely evidence:
narrator says hands-on work taught more than lectures.
Step 3: evaluate choices
Choose the line that supports the claim directly, not merely one that is about the same topic.
Direct vs indirect support
Claim:
The species is highly adaptable.
Weak evidence:
The species lives in forests.
Stronger:
Populations thrive in forests, grasslands, cities, and coastal habitats.
The second demonstrates adaptability.
Evidence does not need to repeat the claim
Good evidence often implies rather than restates.
Claim:
The speaker is reluctant to leave.
Evidence:
At the doorway, the speaker pauses repeatedly, looks back, and asks whether the visit can continue another day.
That behavior supports reluctance.
Quantitative Evidence
These questions combine text with:
- tables;
- bar graphs;
- line graphs.
You may be asked which data best support a conclusion.
Read the claim before the graph
This prevents information overload.
Suppose the claim is:
Treatment A produced the largest improvement between Week 1 and Week 4.
You need:
- Treatment A at Week 1;
- Treatment A at Week 4;
- compare its change with other treatments.
You may not need every value in the graph.
Know what the axes mean
Before reading numbers:
- x-axis?
- y-axis?
- units?
- categories?
- legend?
- time period?
A graph showing percent change is not the same as a graph showing raw values.
Compare the correct quantity
If the claim is about change:
[ change = final - initial ]
If about percent change:
[ \frac{final-initial}{initial}\times100 ]
Do not confuse:
- highest final value;
- biggest increase;
- highest percentage increase.
These can be different.
Example

Absolute increases:
- A: +8
- B: +6
- C: +6
So Group A has the largest absolute increase.
But percentage increases:
- A: 80%
- B: 30%
- C: 100%
Group C has the largest percentage increase.
Read the claim carefully.
Don't overinterpret data
If a graph shows two variables move together, it may support an association.
It does not automatically prove causation.
SAT evidence questions often reward precise language such as:
- “is consistent with”
- “supports”
- “is associated with”
rather than unsupported universal claims.
Text + graph combination
Sometimes the text gives a hypothesis and the graph gives results.
Your task:
- translate hypothesis into a predicted data pattern;
- inspect graph;
- choose the statement matching the pattern.
This is much easier than staring at every bar first. The same "structure before content" habit helps with form, structure and sense questions on the Writing side of the test.
Common traps
Trap 1: same topic, wrong evidence
The quote mentions the subject but not the claim.
Trap 2: strongest-sounding quote
Emotional language does not equal relevance.
Trap 3: correct number, wrong category
Check row/column labels.
Trap 4: absolute vs percentage
Know which is requested.
Trap 5: causation overclaim
Evidence supports less than the answer claims.
Trap 6: cherry-picking one data point
If the claim concerns a trend, one isolated point may not prove it.

Worked textual example
Claim:
The author sees uncertainty as useful to scientific discovery.
Evidence choice:
“Questions that resist immediate answers often lead researchers toward the most productive experiments.”
This directly connects uncertainty with productive investigation.
Worked quantitative example
A study predicts:
Plants exposed to longer daylight will flower earlier.
Data:

The data support the prediction because flowering day decreases as daylight increases.

- What exactly is the claim?
- What evidence pattern would prove it?
- Am I using the correct row/axis/unit?
- Does the answer support the full claim?
- Is the answer stronger than the evidence?
