SAT Rhetorical Synthesis: Notes Questions Strategy + Practice
Master SAT rhetorical synthesis questions: use student notes to meet a specific writing goal, avoid irrelevant facts, and practice with original examples.
Rhetorical Synthesis questions give you a set of student notes and a specific writing goal.
They ask which sentence most effectively uses relevant information from the notes to accomplish that goal.
These questions belong to Expression of Ideas.
The core skill is not remembering every note.
It is filtering.
The goal tells you what information matters.
What the question looks like
You may see notes such as:
- Scientist A conducted a study in 2018.
- The study examined migratory birds.
- 42 birds were tracked.
- Most birds changed route after storms.
- Scientist A later studied sea turtles.
Then a goal such as:
The student wants to emphasize the study's finding.
The best answer should focus on:
Most tracked birds changed route after storms.
The scientist's later turtle research is true but irrelevant.
The three-step method
Step 1: Read the goal first
Before reading every note deeply, identify the task.
Common goals:
- introduce a topic;
- emphasize a similarity;
- emphasize a difference;
- present a finding;
- explain chronology;
- give an example;
- make a generalization;
- support a claim;
- describe a method.
Step 2: Mark only relevant notes
Ask:
Which 1–3 facts directly serve the goal?
Ignore facts that are accurate but unnecessary.
Step 3: Evaluate answer choices for both truth and purpose
The correct answer must be:
- supported by the notes;
- relevant to the goal;
- appropriately framed.
An answer can be factually true and still wrong because it does not accomplish the rhetorical purpose.
Goal: introduce a topic
If the goal is to introduce an artist's approach, the best answer may combine:
- who the artist is;
- what technique they use.
It probably does not need:
- exact birth year;
- unrelated award;
- museum opening date.
Goal: emphasize a contrast
Look for paired differences.
Notes:
- Species A nests on cliffs.
- Species B nests on the ground.
- Both migrate south in winter.
Goal:
Emphasize a difference in nesting behavior.
Best synthesis:
Although both species migrate south, Species A nests on cliffs whereas Species B nests on the ground.
The migration detail may help frame the contrast, but the nesting difference must be central.
Goal: emphasize similarity
Do not choose an answer that merely describes both things separately.
It should make the relationship explicit:
- both;
- similarly;
- each;
- in common.
Goal: present a finding
Distinguish method from result.
Method:
Researchers tracked 42 birds with GPS tags.
Finding:
Most birds altered their routes after severe storms.
If the goal asks for the finding, an answer focusing only on GPS tags misses the task.
Goal: explain chronology
Use dates/order only when they matter.
The right answer may say:
After publishing her first study in 2018, Chen expanded the project in 2021.
Chronology questions reward a clear sequence, not a pile of dates.
Goal: support a claim
Suppose the claim is:
Urban green roofs can reduce building temperatures.
Relevant note:
In a 2025 trial, roof surfaces with vegetation averaged 6°C cooler than conventional roofs.
That quantitative result supports the claim directly.
A note saying green roofs are visually attractive does not.
Do you need to use every note?
No.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions.
The notes contain more information than the goal requires.
Strong synthesis often uses less information, not more.
The correct answer may paraphrase
The answer choice does not need to copy note wording.
Notes:
68% of participants selected the reusable container.
A valid synthesis:
More than two-thirds of participants preferred the reusable option.
As long as the paraphrase is accurate. Combining two notes into one clean sentence often comes down to the same sentence boundaries rules tested elsewhere on the SAT.
Quantitative precision
If an answer changes a statistic, check carefully.
Notes:
48 of 80 participants responded positively.
That equals 60%.
An option saying “most participants” is supported.
An option saying “nearly all participants” is not.
Common traps
Trap 1: true but irrelevant
Every fact in the wrong answer may be true.
The question asks for purpose, not merely truth.
Trap 2: including too much
An answer can become unfocused by cramming in unrelated notes.
Trap 3: reversing comparison
If notes say A > B, do not accept an option saying B > A.
Trap 4: converting evidence into an unsupported causal claim
Notes:
Cities with more trees had lower summer surface temperatures.
Wrong overclaim:
Planting trees always causes summer temperatures to fall.
Correlation in notes does not automatically establish universal causation. Distinguishing a supported inference from an overclaim is really the same skill tested in inference questions.
Trap 5: missing the goal word
“Introduce,” “emphasize,” “compare,” and “illustrate” require different outputs.
Worked example
Notes:
- Historian Mira Shah studied trade records from 1750–1780.
- She examined 320 shipping documents.
- The number of recorded tea shipments doubled over the period.
- Shah also studies nineteenth-century textiles.
Goal:
Emphasize the change Shah found in tea shipments.
A. Shah studies trade records and nineteenth-century textiles.
B. Shah examined 320 shipping documents from 1750–1780 and found that recorded tea shipments doubled over that period.
C. Trade records can provide information about economic history.
D. Shah's work covers several centuries.
Answer: B
It directly states the relevant finding and gives useful method/time context.
Original mini-practice

- Engineer Luis Moreno tested three bridge coatings.
- Coating A lasted 8 months.
- Coating B lasted 14 months.
- Coating C lasted 21 months.
- The tests used identical salt-spray conditions.
Goal:
Emphasize which coating was most durable.
A. Moreno tested three coatings under identical salt-spray conditions.
B. Coating C lasted 21 months, longer than either Coating A or B.
C. Coating A lasted 8 months and Coating B lasted 14 months.
D. Salt spray can damage bridge coatings.

- Poet Nia Cole published her first collection in 2014.
- Her second appeared in 2019.
- Both collections use maritime imagery.
- The second also experiments with fragmented syntax.
Goal:
Emphasize a similarity between the collections.
A. Cole's second collection experiments with fragmented syntax.
B. Cole published collections in 2014 and 2019.
C. Both of Cole's collections make substantial use of maritime imagery.
D. Cole's first collection predates her second by five years.

- Study included 200 households.
- 100 received energy-use feedback.
- 100 did not.
- Feedback group reduced electricity use by 9%.
- Control group reduced use by 1%.
Goal:
Present evidence supporting the claim that feedback can reduce electricity use.
A. The study included 200 households divided into two groups.
B. Households receiving feedback reduced electricity use by 9%, compared with 1% in the control group.
C. Electricity use varies among households.
D. Researchers gave feedback to 100 households.

Fast checklist
Before answering, ask:
- What verb describes the goal?
- Which facts serve that goal?
- Does the answer include irrelevant material?
- Does it preserve the notes accurately?
- Does it overclaim?
